The last Friday of June 2022, was remarked to be a notable day in the US supreme court history, where the ultimate authority ruled in favour of abortion law. This famous declaration was made in the process of reversing the case of Roe Vs Wade.
Roe Vs Wade is an outstanding case wherein the US court has struck down several Texas laws that criminalized abortion. In this milestone case, which was held back in 1970, a lady named Jane Roe filled a suit against Henry Wade, a district attorney of Dallas County, Texas, the place of her dwelling. Here she challenged the Texas law making abortion illegal, except where the treating doctor orders to save a woman’s life. Ms Roe also alleged that the state laws were unconditional and unconstitutionally vague and curtailed her right to privacy. This is a landmark legal instance that was the base legal abortions across America for nearly half a decade.
This case is considered to be one of the important decisions by the Supreme court, yet numerous women voice that it infringes their rights over their own bodies. The judgement will result in an immediate ban on abortions however with some exceptions.
This judgement has triggered outrage in many states of the U.S. Thousands have taken the streets to protest against the ruling passed by the Court. The judgement has split the country into legal abortion and illegal abortion. The ruling has come along ideological lines, with voting for constitutionally protecting the right to abortion, the ruling was done under the bench which consisted six conservative justices and three liberal justices which also consisted of two women judges.
The judges agreed that the decision is misery for many women who have lost fundamental constitutional protection.
A team of conservative judges mentioned that the earlier decision with Ms Roe was awfully wrong from the beginning and further quoted that the perceptive was extremely frail and had damaging effects. Further, the abortion rights activists group say that the Supreme Court judgement will affect and turn over 30 million women into second class half of them who are in their reproductive age.
Repercussions of this decision can be seen all around.
People call this a slap on the face of women. Republican citizens have roared this verdict as an extreme dark goal ripping off a women’s right to maintain and decide their own reproductive health.
In another such case, the court allowed abortion only with one exception, of saving the life of the mother was directed by Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, a Republican. Further, he also casted-off a judgement on a case, where a 13-year-old was forced to keep the pregnancy term, who was a physical assault victim. Adding to his previous statement he quoted that forcing women to carry pregnancies will destroy them physically and mentally, especially where there is very little financial and ethical support for life after birth, health care and child care.
